Symposia, workshops, activities features, and impressive photography exhibitions are just some of the diverse events that transform photokina into much more than just a trade show for technology and products. The supporting program will provide added value for international trade visitors and private users alike. The offerings for imaging professionals from all over the world will focus on the exchange of information regarding the latest imaging trends, as well as on market developments and future business models. By contrast, the offers for the photography enthusiasts among private users will concentrate on hands-on systems, testing, and immersive experiences. Here are some of the highlights:
Digital storage – film-based archiving?”
In an event titled “Digital storage – film-based archiving?”, the science and technology section of the German Society for Photography (DGPh) will be joining Koelnmesse and Prophoto GmbH to stage a presentation forum at photokina 2008 that will showcase the opportunities and limitations of film-based and digital archiving. The forum will be held in Koelnmesse’s Kristallsaal at Congress Center East on September 25 (afternoon) and September 26 (morning). With the forum, DGPh will be continuing its series of events titled “Photography – where are we headed?”, which was launched at photokina 2006. Participation in the forum is free of charge.
Meet the Professionals
In 2008, the creative scene can once again look forward to a contact forum titled “Meet the Professionals”. At the forum, image agencies, publishing houses and user associations and organizations will be introducing themselves to their target groups and presenting their work to professionals from the creative photography scene. The contact forum will provide ample opportunities for the extensive exchange of information and for interesting panel discussions and presentations on current sector topics, which will be held daily on the stage in Hall 1.
Photo Book XXL
One of the major attractions at photokina 2008 is the largest photo book worldwide – the Photo Book XXL. With 10 pages – each 3 metres wide and 2 metres high – Photo Book XXL is the eye-catcher in hall 10.2. The largest photo book worldwide is surrounded by photo kiosks and photo printers. All visitors to photokina 2008 are invited to print their digital picture data on paper and to find room for their pictures in the giant Photo Book XXL All contributors of pictures enter a raffle for high-quality photo and imaging products..
Lomography – The future is analogue’
On the theme “The future is analogue the Lomographic Society International presents a impressive program round about Lomography at photokina 2008. Beside a huge LomoWall exhibition with all submitted images from the international Lomograpy competition will be in the focus of the presentation. Special workshops and speeches as well as live “analogue” performances will be rounded up with the Lomography Chill-Out and Meeting Lounge daily, from 6 to 8pm for the duration of the fair.
fotocommunity at photokina 2008
fotocommunity, Europe’s largest Internet community for photography, will turn its stand at photokina 2008 into a meeting place for all dedicated amateur photographers. On every day of the fair, the fotocommunity stage will feature top-rate workshops on exciting photography topics. In addition, the organization will hold daily competitions with great prizes and set up a spacious lounge area that will invite visitors to relax and talk about photography. Naturally, visitors will also be able to use surf stations free of charge. On the Saturday of photokina (September 27), fotocommunity will be holding its World Convention – a fantastic party with live music, where 8,000 to 10,000 fotocommunity users from all over the world are expected! At the World Convention, fotocommunity offers workshops by imaging experts, where visitors have a chance to learn directly from the professionals by “looking over the shoulders” of top photographers such as Robin Preston and Doc Baumann – the “King of Photoshop.” Admission tickets for the fotocommunity World Convention will be available from June 13 at the website www.fotocommunity.de.
IMAGO1:1 – the “walk-in camera” at photokina 2008
With the Imago 1:1 – the walk-in self-portrait camera with the original dimensions of 7 meters x 4 meters x 3 meters – objects can be photographed in 1:1 scale (life size) and directly printed in black-and-white in a 60 x 200 cm format on silver gelatin reversal paper. There is no negative with this analogous photographic process; the image is exposed by means of projection onto the photographic paper – every image is one of a kind. Visitors at photokina 2008 will have the chance to see the original IMAGO1:1 walk-in camera in action. In addition, an exhibition of the best images from recent decades will be shown.
