In November of 2012 in cooperation with the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations the WORLD HARMONY RUN visited Hanoi and Ha Long Bay. It was a truly remarkable event and all participants very grateful for the enthusiastic and heartfelt welcome from Vietnam. The 2012 Spiritual Planetary Summit (December 18-23) in Yucatan, Mexico, is the celebration of the closure of the Long Mayan Count, and with this, the end of a cycle where the learning was held by the means of fear and its effects: sorrow, disease and death. The clock is ticking, imminent destruction scheduled to begin December 2012! We the undersigned bring to your attention that, when one talks about the protection of world heritage one cannot help to think of UNESCO and its commitment and responsibility to find prompt solutions for the safeguard and protection of endangered sites. After 30 years of armed conflicts Afghanistan has suffered the loss and desecration of thousands of objects and hundreds of sites such as the city of Ai Khanum and Bamiyan, a site that would eventually be enlisted as a site to be protected but too late. Let us NOT repeat the same mistake and ACT now for: the Heritage of Afghanistan is once again faced with violation and inpending loss, this time in the case of the immense Buddhist site of Mess Aynak (see picture). We believe that while economical development through the mining of precious minerals, is necessary, it cannot become an additional tool or exscuse for further destruction of an already weakened Heritage. We the undersigned ask of UNESCO that the site of Mess Aynak, Afghanistan be enlisted immediatly on the List of Endangered Sites and the World Heritage List thus giving UNESCO the opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to the protection and safeguard of our World’s Heritage.
Archaeologists from around the world are fighting to save a 2,600-year-old Buddhist city, called one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Asia, from imminent destruction by a Chinese mining company in volatile Logar province, Afghanistan. Sign the petition to save the ancient city of Mes Aynak from needless destruction while preventing irreversible environmental harm to Kabul watershed and the Afghan people.This ancient location, is in crisis because it will become a copper mine this coming December. The story for me is in how light contrasts the absence of light in shaping forms within a given frame of time and space. The presence of shadows for instance on a landscape is largely determined by three factors: wind speed, the distance of the clouds from a particular location and the angle of the Sun in relation to that location. The density and volume of water that comprises a cloud also effects how dark or how large a shadow will appear. While the time of day along with suspended particulates such as dust, smoke, and industrial pollution determines how clearly all this can be seen. Occasionally I’ll be amazed when I return to a place I am familiar with only to see it as something entirely new because of a particular light condition that is occurring. This can be especially dramatic with landscapes that reveal the many layers of time. Places where I can imagine worlds that have passed, worlds that are present, and worlds that are yet to be. - Kent Tate

The “World Harmony Run”, an international initiative for peace, established by Sri Chinmoy 25 years ago, was truly honoured to be able to present His Excellency Vu Xuan Hong with their World Harmony Run Torch-Bearer award In Nha Trang, Vietnam. Mr. Hong currently serves in quite a number of capacities. He is President of the VUFO (Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations), which co-ordinates Vietnam’s official contacts with all international organisations; Deputy to National Assembly; Member of National Assembly’s External Affairs Comittee and Permanent Member of the Committee for Foreign NGO Affairs. Perhaps most importantly he is a man who values peace, friendship and harmony above all elseand works tirelessly to enable these qualities to find a fertile environment in which to thrive. The World Harmony Run has been working with his organisation for 20 years, since Sri Chinmoy’s first visit to Viet Nam in 1992. In 2004 Mr Hong arranged or Sri Chinmoy to receive Vietnam’s highest national award given to a person from another nation – the Medal for Peace and Friendship Among Nations. Representatives of over 30 countries introduced themselves by saying their country and the word for Peace in their language. As an introduction to the World Harmnoy Run, a video of Dr. Davidson Hepburn, President of the UNESCO General Conference (2009-2011) was shown. It included clips from World Harmony Run events around the world, which illustrate Dr Hepburn’s message for 25th Anniversary of the World Harmony Run and a vision for the decade 2012 to 2022 and beyond. Executive Director Salil Wilson presented Mr Hong with the “Torch Bearer” award for his service particularly in the NGO and non-profit sector. Salil said: “In Mr Hong we find not just one or two good qualities or significant achievement, but a veritable host. Here is a jewel of humanity and we are truly fortunate to have this humbling opportunity to recognise and honour his significant contributions to the betterment of humanity.”
